Planted Chicken & Pork in Review
Result from 09.07.2021
The Swiss startup Planted Foods (short: Planted) specializes in creating plant-based chicken and pork. Recently, the company has conquered the supermarkets. But now the question arises: How good are Planted’s products really? Welcome to the ultimate Planted Review.
Planted offers one of the tastiest meat alternatives out there. It tastes exactly like traditional meat. If you didn’t know you were eating vegetables, you wouldn’t notice.
Moreover, the company is very concerned about the environment. Therefore, it uses recycled and recyclable packaging for its products.
Planted differentiates itself from other plant-based companies in that it does not use soy at all. Their products are mainly prepared with pea protein. Soy in itself is very nutritious. However, it might be indigestible for some people. Furthermore, soy allergy is one of the most common food allergies.
The company uses no additives, preservatives, flavorings, additives, or GMOs. Their plain chicken is produced with only 4 ingredients: water, pea protein, pea fiber, and canola oil. In contrast, the pork is based on a mix of proteins: pea, sunflower, and oat. Planted adds a healthy dose of vitamin B12 to all of its products.
Even though Planted’s products are healthy, they are not as nutritious as conventional meat. They contain up to 40% less protein. Their most protein-rich product is plain pulled pork. Its protein content is only 6 percent less than its conventional counterpart.
The company is not organic yet, but they intend to change that in the future. Furthermore, the price is slightly high at €25 per kilogram of meat, but it is nothing unusual for meat substitutes.
When it comes to taste, I would definitely recommend Planted. However, I am not yet satisfied with the texture. The chicken is quite dense, and its fibers are slightly too fine. It is a bit challenging to make it juicy. In contrast, the pork is much more succulent, as the pieces are cut more finely. This way, the marinade/sauce can coat the meat better.
Given all aspects, I would recommend Planted for its taste. I am a big fan of the pork, but the company could improve the texture of the chicken.
